QUALITIES OF A DEVOTEE

Chant and Hear:
Without çravaëaà and kértanam, it is impossible for the devotional
seed to grow. We should take to the process of chanting and hearing.
We often hear that we should chant and hear very attentively; we
should also endeavor to avoid the offenses as we chant and hear. Çréla
Bhaktisiddhänta Sarasvaté Öhäkura has explained that if one is just
chanting and is not endeavoring to avoid the ten offenses, then
gradually one gets attached to sense gratification and impersonalist
philosophy.

Attentive Chanting:
If we chant attentively then chanting will gradually destroy our
anarthas as Rupa Gosvami has explained. As a result of bhajana-kriya,
anartha-nivrtti takes place. Bhajana-kriya is the process of chanting
and hearing along with the execution of the process of sadhana-bhakti.
Why we are not surrendering to Krsna? Due to the presence of unlimited
anarthas, which are the results of — desires from past lives & sinful
activities executed prior to coming to Krsna consciousness and
unlimited desires that we have accumulated from the environment and
the society in which we have grown up and lived. All these anarthas
are stumbling blocks. These anarthas cover our constitutional position
to engage in the service of the Lord. That is why Sri Caitanya
Mahaprabhu has said “ceto-darpana-marjanam [Cc. Antya 20.12].” As a
result of attentive chanting and our endeavor to avoid the offenses,
one is able to destroy the anarthas and gradually develop nistha. But
nistha by itself is not enough. We have to keep endeavoring,
endeavoring & endeavoring and then ultimately nistha culminates in
krsna-prema.

Being Merciful:
A Vaisnava is a truly merciful individual. What does it really mean
when it is said that a devotee is merciful — A devotee is interested
in reminding himself about the instructions of the Spiritual master,
sadhu and sastra so that he can correct his own spiritual execution
and at the same time he is desireous of giving this topmost knowledge
to others so that they can be free from the cycle of birth and death.

 Book Distribution:
Out of various programs that Prabhupada gave us by which we can
distribute mercy, the   most important activity is book distribution.
Why? These books contain the words of the Supreme Lord and the
explanations by the pure devotees and the predecessor acaryas. When
Prabhupada wrote the purports of these verses, he used to refer to the
commentaries of predecessor acaryas. These books contain the
instructions of the Lord and when the devotees endeavor to give these
books to others, they are actually engaging in the highest welfare
activity. The highest welfare activity one can engage in this planet
is to give people these transcendental books because they have the
capacity to destroy the illusionary concept of life and to get one
attached to the process of bhakti.

False Prestige:
False prestige is the result of maintenance of ahankara. False
prestige means — I want to be recognized, I want to be worshiped, I
want to be known as the best man in the town, I want to be known as
the best devotee, I want to be known as the most surrendered devotee
etc. There are varieties of desires or activities that can fall in the
category of false prestige. Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu has advised us to
be more humble. To be humble means to be devoid of feelings of false
prestige. False prestige has to be renounced; we have to give up the
desire of the false prestige. This desire of false prestige manifests
itself in two ways — one is gross and other is subtle. One is that I
want open recognition that I am the best devotee; I have done so much
service etc and that is the gross manifestation. Then there is subtle
manifestation. I may not be saying it openly but in my heart I want
everybody to know that no one is more sincere than me; no one is more
dutiful than me etc. We have to endeavor to take out or eliminate this
desire for false prestige both internally and externally. When Sri
Caitanya Mahaprabhu says that one should be devoid of all sense of
false prestige, this is what He means.
